 What choices are bachelor for those of us who have not yet had the pleasure of changing the alternator? Pro/cons and price difference.

New Valkyrie alternator
New Goldwing alternator
Rebuilt alternator

I've heard of a company past the name of "Mars" also makes Valkyrie alternators. Don't know annihilation about them. Are they new or rebuilt?

Is the Interstate alternator the aforementioned as a Standard/Tourer?

Can you lot install a higher output alternator?

You'll get a lot of answers to those questions, but you probably
won't become my whacky solution: I kept looking until I found a
used ane from a crashed wheel with low mileage cheap on eBay.

I don't remember now how much I have in my spare alternator now, effectually
$fourscore I think. It is on the shelf, packaged for mailing, in case I ever
demand to telephone call home and get information technology i-dayed to me... information technology has near 22K
miles of use on it and is clean looking.

To answer your questions:

Valkyrie alt:  Very loftier priced.
Golden Fly Alt:  Cheaper but ya have to movement the mounting of the 2 cases.
MARS:   Rebuilt and he volition/tin build it for higher output.

My choice would be a Goldwing Alt.

And I would suggest if your miles are around threescore,000 or more to pull and replace the brushes. Cheap insurance. I personally accept rebuilt around lx of them, ninety% of the fourth dimension when the rotor has a bad winding it is caused by wore out brushes. I believe they showtime to arc and wipe the winding. MARS used to exist a expert source, I accept bought several from him, simply his web site has moved or no longer available.
As well MARS has the ability to rewind the rotors.

Gold Wing alternator is simple to reclock for the Valkyrie.  Take out 3 bolts property the housings together and turn the front of the case to lucifer the old one that you lot removed.  Easy once you lay them next to each other and it is much cheaper.  Wouldn't stake my life on this 1, but the same alternator volition fit in all models.  If you order the Gold Wing alternator it will come up with a capacitor attached that you can remove if you don't have a radio as it'southward purpose is to remove noise that the alternator inherently produces.
MarkT I think on his site has information on his High Output alternator and what he had to practice become it installed.  I call back he had to notch the frame.

To the best of my knowledge, at that place is no divergence in the performance of a Tourer/Std. alternator compared to an I/S unit.

And just an FYI, I have a spare used alternator and starter if any one gets caught with their pants downward. Ever willing to get some out of a demark if possible. As well spare drive shafts, spline couplings and u-joints.

At 90k mine went out on my '99 IS.  I bought a 1500 Goldwing (function # in ShopTalk), clocked it to lucifer the Valk alt I pulled out, and it has been working fine.  About $150-200 cheaper than the Valk unit.

Role # is 31100-MT2-015
"The last & plastic insulator are different where you connect the alternator battery wire. You have to take off the capacitor that is mounted on the Aureate Wing alternator and rotate the forepart housing to match the holes from the Valkyrie model so that it volition fit."

 As per Ron Ayers Parts Fiche, alternator 31100-MT2-015 fits on the xxx post-obit GL1500 Goldwing models :

Honda Gilded Wing GL1500 (1988 to 1990)

Honda Aureate Wing ASPENCADE GL1500A (1991 to 2000)

Honda GOLD Wing INTERSTATE GL1500I (1991 to 1996)

Honda GOLD Fly SE GL1500SE (1990 to 2000)
